There is always the risk of pitfalls; its just about knowing how to avoid falling into them. You cannot avoid risk and dangers on the path to enlightenment.

it seems our way of saying it is a bit different.when you say 'bad when it [ego] becomes purely self-serving', i don't get it.when i am serving my ego by using every opportunity to stroke it up and down, and forgetting to use common sense where i would rather want to, then i would say i am contradicting my interests.'selfless love' in combination with 'tremendous struggle'... just seems there might be a little pitfall there.

Can a mother be called selfish because she cares about her childs' wellbeing and wants him\her to be healthy, do well and have the right morals and support? I don't think so. I understand that ego can come in when there is pride about helping somebody or teaching them; or if you are looking for an end for yourself. But the principle of altruism is essentially a pure one - and is what all the prophets have taught. Anything else would mean you do nothing and become a power-less corpse.

How can it be egoistic if it is "selfless love"?You cannot get rid of all the ego; because in fact the ego is not a bad thing. Its only bad when it becomes purely self-serving.

the post about selfless love etc was a reply to persianpaladin, me still not figured out how to post : )

a trick with selfless love and concern for others is that the idea itself strokes ego.and if something strokes ego, it creates a motive to be inadequate and to avoid questioning the ego stroking idea.

I'm sorry...but I cant make sense of what you're saying. Perhaps maybe you can rephrase it? :-)My own opinion is that only certain people deserve self-less concern. Some people just deserve to suffer or be put in prison or exposed for the evil or trouble-makers that they are.

how do youconcern for others if you dont know who youam..?If you are not.. a somebody..You will not know how to reflect yourmorale or "concern" from a set of rulesof who or how to concern for others..?Or do that come impulsivevely?..or do you have to know how to care..?
