This ending answers why the Alpha Male kept showing up throughout the film after Neville takes the girl. With the grenade ending it leaves us asking why we should care about this one darkseeker.

what i said was:the reason why it was never made the real ending was because it went against the mindless zombie theme of the movie.while the zombies are suposed to be as inteligent as a monkey, they have uncontrollable rage. so it wouldnt work.

I like this ending better since it is more in line with the book. In the book a cure is never found.
